David was born half-orphan—six months after his father’s death. At first, the boy was raised surrounded by his mother’s and nurse’s love; however, with the arrival of a stepfather—a stubborn tyrant who considered the child a burden—he had to forget his previous life. Another “tutor,” an ignorant Mr. Murdstone, former a brewer’s salesman turned school principal, continued to hammer into the young hero his poor ideas about order. These barbaric methods of upbringing would be interrupted by the outwardly stern Miss Trotwood, who would become for the boy the embodiment of goodness and justice.
