Oh, it took Tosya a very long time to get to her new place of work!
First she was sped along by a train. Outside the carriage window, empty autumn fields unfolded like a fan, sparse russet copses flickered by, unfamiliar cities with the smoky chimneys of factories loomed for long stretches. And villages and settlements kept running out to the railway line—only to show themselves off to Tosya for a moment, streak across the windowpane at full speed, and tumble down the embankment. For the first time in her life Tosya had traveled so far, and from unfamiliarity it sometimes seemed to her that her whole native country had lined up before her, while she, in her all-metal springy carriage, raced along the ranks and reviewed the parade.
