Knud Gamsun (1859–1952) is a Norwegian writer and a Nobel Prize in Literature laureate for 1920. In the novels “Children of the Time” (1913) and its sequel “Segelfoss” (1922), Knud Gamsun told the story of the rise and decline of two wealthy families. The relationship between the estate owner, Lieutenant Vilads Holmsen, and his wife, Mrs. Adelgeida—was characteristic of many Gamsun characters: love and mutual rejection, a kind of love-as-enmity that twists their lives and leads to a breakup.
