Description
Ryu Murakami is a pioneer of a new direction in Japanese literature. His works are marked by boldness in choosing themes, gripping plotlines in the style of thrillers, and deep psychological insight. He portrays reality critically, exploring its dark sides and revealing the problems of contemporary Japanese society.

In 1976, he received the Akutagawa Prize.

One of his novels tells about the coming of age of two half-brothers, Hasu and Kiku, who at a subconscious level carry a fear of being on the brink of life and death for thirty hours. That fear prevents them from adapting to reality, forcing them to hide in an illusory world. They try to cope with psychological traumas, but not always successfully. Hasu finds success as a singer, yet cannot withstand the pressure of fame and love, remaining “unneeded” and driving himself into a nervous breakdown.

— You’re acting like a lunatic.

— But isn’t that what it means to be a pop star?

Kiku, instead of dreaming of a sports career, wants to unleash chaos in Tokyo—and in the end he manages to do it. He takes revenge simply for revenge’s sake.

Despite the atmosphere of hopelessness and despair surrounding the characters, the reader feels for them and hopes they will manage to overcome their difficulties and not lose themselves to madness and cruelty.
