He started out as a junior assistant to the market’s district supervisor and rose to become the first chief of the Petrograd Detective Police. Every one valued the talented detective: the authorities for his high professionalism, ordinary people for his desire to help those in trouble selflessly, and the criminal world for his honesty and exceptional—by the standards of those times—decency. Even while he was alive, the famous detective Ivan Dmitrievich Putilin became a literary character. In the late 19th century, stories about his adventures competed in the Russian Empire with stories about Sherlock Holmes.
