On May 4, 1975, Vladimir Voinovich was called in for a conversation at Lubyanka, where he was offered an edition of his selected works in the USSR. The further conditions for lifting the ban on publishing his works were proposed to Vladimir Nikolayevich to discuss in a more relaxed setting—in the hotel “Metropol” room. During that meeting, there was an assassination attempt on Voinovich, and the writer investigated it for eighteen years. We offer you an audio version of this tangled detective story as the author himself recounted it—with descriptions of the circumstances in which it happened, the events that followed it, and with added documents obtained as a result of an investigation that ultimately led to the revelation of a secret the KGB had worked so hard to keep.
