In Soviet times Kalitin worked in a secret laboratory located on a remote island. Deep in the gloomy underground dungeons carved beneath a massive citadel of a former monastery, he created the main work of his life… The Debutant — a gas that kills instantly and leaves no traces of its use; a cruel and merciless monster with no fingerprints, deprived of any body that could be tracked.
But the Soviet Union collapsed, and Kalitin had to flee. Here, in the country of a former enemy, he indulges in memories, hopes to regain a laboratory and finalize the terrible poison. Yet the homeland that let the scientist go—temporarily unclenching its steel jaws—has now grown strong again.
Russia, like the USSR, has no pity for defectors, but it has enormous opportunities—and above all, the same means.
Major Grebenyuk and Lieutenant Colonel Shershnev are sent to eliminate the scientist. Shershnev carries an elegant vial in his suitcase, inside which the Debutant waits for its time.
