Laozi (6th–5th century BCE) is an ancient Chinese philosopher, the founder of Daoism.
The “Dao De Jing” (“The Book of the Way and Virtue”) is a classic philosophical treatise of Daoism and a major monument of Chinese thought. In the number of translations into foreign languages, the Dao De Jing ranks second only to the Bible. Dao (Chinese: “the Way”) is one of the most important categories in Chinese philosophy, interpreted by Daoists as something fundamental to the entire universe and the eternal order of things. As an ideal of existence for everything in the world—something a person must draw close to in life—one should know the Dao in order to grasp the meaning, purpose, and happiness of being.
