The studio “MediaBook” presents an audiobook “Daniella” by the great and widely popular writer George Sand. A legend among French literature writers. All her life was devoted to the struggle for human freedom and happiness. Learning of Sand’s passing, Victor Hugo wrote: “I mourn the dead; I greet the immortal!”
The book is read by the popular stage and film actor Mikhail Roslyakov.
“Rummaging through my things,… Marina at first did not quite understand what she had before her eyes; but then she suddenly burst out screaming in horror and indignation and dashed out of the room headlong.
‘Fie,’ said Uncle, looking at the naked figure that had so terrified Marina. ‘So this is what you’re up to? You draw naked human forms. And it’s disgusting, and it serves no purpose. Besides, it seems to be slapped together somehow. To tell the truth, I liked your curious little people more—the ones you used to write. And the work was cleaner, and at least respectable: the village dress would be painted over exactly to the last detail, and you could show it to anyone—there’s nothing to be ashamed of. But let’s talk about the matter,’ he continued, throwing my academic study into the fireplace.
‘How did you behave in this new Babylon? Did you run up debts?’
‘No, uncle.’
‘Don’t deny it—tell the truth instead.’
‘I swear to you that no—I didn’t want to scare you or upset you. For the future, if you will allow me to persuade you of certain unquestionable truths, perhaps…’
‘You’re lying to me; I’m sure you owe for everything!’
‘I assure you on my honor that no…’
‘But you intend to…’
‘I have no intention at all, but I must tell you that I’m sick and tired of this system of thrift… depriving myself of the conveniences in life in order to acquire those very conveniences in the future—it’s both ridiculous and foolish.’
