Description
Lюдмила Уліцька’s novel “Daniel Stein, Translator” is a literary sensation of recent years. Huge print runs (and it’s a composition that’s complex, far from paperback fiction), disputes, and finally the “Big Book” prize. Daniel Stein (the hero has a specific real-life prototype), at the risk of his life (he himself is Jewish), saves about three hundred ghetto prisoners during the Second World War. At the end of the war, having converted to Christianity, he becomes a Catholic priest and leaves for Israel, where he continues serving people—this is how he understands his mission. Sharp questions of faith are full-fledged elements of the narrative, even though L. Ulička has more than once said that she is “not a theologian and doesn’t do preaching—she simply tells about a unique person, by their honesty and courage.”
