The novel “What Next, Little Man?” became one of the most famous works of 20th-century German literature. Published in 1932 in Germany, it brought Hans Fallada international fame and led to accusations of anti-Nazi activities at home, which resulted in the book being removed from libraries and a significant part of the print run destroyed.
Due to censorship, the first edition underwent “correct” editorial adjustments and lost almost a quarter of the original text. The full version in German was published only in 2016. This edition is the first to present the complete author’s version of the novel in Russian.
Johannes and Emma, a young couple, decide to start a shared life, hoping that love will help them overcome their difficulties. However, reality turns out harsher than they expected. The country is going through an economic crisis; more than a third of the adult population is unemployed, and Nazi toughs appear on the streets.
Their life becomes a desperate struggle against poverty and the lack of rights.
