Saint Theophan the Recluse was a theologian, a publicist-preacher. He occupies a special place among Russian preachers and hierarchs of the 19th century. The saint saw his service to the Church of God in the feat of spiritual and literary creativity. “To write,” he said, “is a service that the Church needs.” Throughout his pastoral ministry, he devoted himself to explaining the path of truly Christian life, grounded in spiritual attentiveness. Theophan the Recluse left behind an immense theological legacy: works interpreting the Word of God, translation works, and writings on asceticism and psychology. His works amaze with encyclopedic breadth and the diversity of his theological interests. The main theme of Saint Theophan’s writings is salvation in Christ. This theme became defining in the teachings collected into the book “What is Spiritual Life and How to Tune One’s Heart to It?”
