On Clean Monday, merchant Rodion Yakovlevich Glebov returned to his hometown after a trip to Moscow. He intended to get home by Maslenitsa, but was late. Despite his dislike of noisy Maslenitsa Moscow, he stayed there to finish his business. Now, satisfied with the results of the trip, Glebov was returning home. His satisfaction did not show on the surface: his gaze remained strict, his eyebrows slightly furrowed. He was dressed neatly and in the Russian way—without excess, but also without negligence: tall boots and a warm cap. His lean, dark face with a long steel beard resembled the face of an old icon.
