In a poorhouse near the Trinity Cathedral on Kulishki in Moscow, a wild spirit started up. It swore, threw old women off the galleries, and could tell such filthy secrets about the local priests that the priests themselves wouldn’t dare go into the dark cells where a poltergeist ran things. To drive out the unclean force, Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich sent for the saint Ilarion to the Florishchevo Hermitage. After two months of nonstop struggle, the bishop drove the demon back down into hell.
But—before disappearing—the poltergeist promised to return. Exactly 66 years later…
And it kept its promise. It returned. And not alone. Misery threatened to do even worse than before. And this time, the hunters who could drive it out couldn’t be found.
That’s how the idea arose for Empress Anna Ioannovna to send Yakov Shapkin there—an insane priest who had lost all meaning in life, whose death, even if the devil killed him, would not be such a pity. And he is alive to this day only because a dead wife came to him and foretold that he had to fulfill some important mission. Now he, along with Matryona Ivanovna—the cat-keeper living in the poorhouse—must face a serious battle against the enemy, where the stakes are far higher than their lives.
But how will they defeat an invisible, bodiless opponent that neither bullets nor sabers can harm at all? And how will the outcome of this battle affect the fate of humankind…
