If someone is excellent at cryptography, on Earth they’re considered crazy. Elsa lives in a written world. She’s almost 17. Soon Elsa will receive a book by Veldana and will take care of it. But something goes wrong—the boundaries of the world are unstable.

Its creator, the well-known European cryptographer Charles Montaigne, has been killed, and Elsa’s mother has been kidnapped. The girl leaves Veldana to go to Earth in search of her. In Victorian Italy she will meet a secret society of scientists—mechanics, alchemists, and cryptographers—learn about the most dangerous weapon of all time, and lift the veil over a political conspiracy. Elsa was born for science. But will she manage the role of custodian of Veldana?
