“Chancellor” is an excellent three-masted ship with a displacement of nine hundred tons, sailing from Charleston to Liverpool. On board, besides a huge cargo of cotton, there are eighteen crew members and eight passengers. What will become of their fates after the cotton in the hold suddenly catches fire?
Jules Verne was inspired to write the novel by a real catastrophe that occurred in 1816 with the French frigate “Medusa,” as well as the subsequent misfortunes of its crew and passengers. At the time, this story was widely known; later, those involved wrote a book about their travels. For the novel, the author drew certain episodes and details from reports about shipwrecks published in Britain’s maritime yearbook.
