We present to your attention the philosophical-dramatic novel by the great French writer Victor Hugo, “The Man Who Laughs,” written in the 1860s. The novel tells the story of the life of a young nobleman—also known as Quasimodo—who was disfigured in childhood (by order of the king). He travels with his protector and companion, a wandering philosopher Ursus, and Dea, a little girl he saved during a storm. The novel is known for the disfigured face of Quasimodo, with a grin of constant laughter frozen upon it.
