Description
The alternative title of the book is “Man — Terminal.” In early 1970s Los Angeles, a computer programmer named Harold Benson is taken by the police to a city hospital. He suffers from a brain disease that causes “blackouts” and aggressive behavior.
Dr. John Ellis, head of the neurosurgeons’ team, describes Benson as an ideal candidate for an experimental procedure — implanting electrodes directly into the brain to control outbursts of aggression. Dr. Janet Ross isn’t convinced the procedure will work, but she’s outvoted by the other doctors. The operation is done: the electrodes are implanted in his brain, and a nuclear recharging chip is inserted into his shoulder. Benson intentionally triggers seizures in order to obtain a discharge of blissful emotions, becoming an “electrical drug addict.” Soon Benson escapes from the hospital. How will the hunt for the patient end?
