The audiobook includes several stories by the English writer John Galsworthy. “The Man from Devon” is a story written by the author in 1900. Old John Ford lives on a farm with his granddaughter, Pashens—beautiful and headstrong, a girl who isn’t afraid of her strict grandfather. Her neighbor Dan takes care of her, but she prefers his bold and desperate counterpart—Zachary Pierce… “Under the Apple Tree” (1916) is one of John Galsworthy’s most popular long stories. A couple decides to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary by going on a picnic to the place where they first met. They settle near a road intersection, close to an unnamed grave of a suicide. And then memories come rushing back to the respectable husband… “Tales of Past Days” (1923) is a touching story of unrequited love and betrayal. A sixteen-year-old boy, passionately in love with an older married woman, inadvertently helps her secret affair with another man. “The Philanthropist” (1923) is a story about a man who is approached by a drunken couple and told a heartbreaking tale in the hope of getting a little money from him. This incident makes him reflect on the motives behind his usual “philanthropy” and understand that it isn’t as altruistic as he had assumed.
