Vanya is a young, ambitious theatre director. To achieve his dream—to stage a daring, conceptual, and loud version of “Peer Gynt”—he pushes his way through without looking back: he begins affairs with affluent women, betrays friends, and plays with the feelings of those close to him. But at some point, the story of his beloved play starts to unfold in his own life. Down in the city sewer, he encounters trolls; the local madman promises to melt him down into cufflinks; and the shadows of the past return, demanding answers. Will he be able to make peace with his conscience? Will he agree to a deal with the trolls? And will he finally learn to be satisfied with himself?
