This is a dark and brutal western reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy and the Coen brothers. It has an gripping plot, vivid characters, witty conversations, and plenty of shootouts.
Joe R. Lansdale is a well-known writer awarded the Bram Stoker Award, the Raymond Chandler Award, and the Edgar Award.
The events take place in the early 20th century. The main characters, Jack and Lula Parker, lose their parents to smallpox. Together with their grandfather, they set off on a journey, but at a river crossing, bandits kill the grandfather, and Lula is kidnapped. Jack manages to escape and reach a city where only two people help him: a dwarf-shooter nicknamed Shorty and a huge gravedigger, Eustace. Together they head into a dangerous place to save Lula from the hands of the gang of Ruthless Bill—a sadist and murderer. Jack realizes that in these lands the value of human life doesn’t matter, and nothing will be the same for them again.
