Description
Victor Hugo’s first novel describes events connected with the slave uprising in Haiti in 1791. Captain Leopold d’Auvergne and the dark-skinned leader Boug-Jargal are madly in love with the beautiful, gentle Marie.

Both of them show her signs of attention; both are equally brave and fearless. Still, luck smiles on Captain d’Auvergne, and it is he to whom Marie gives her hand and heart. Unfortunately, the happiness of the newlyweds doesn’t last long.

On the day of the wedding, the slave uprising begins, and Marie—and later her young husband—are taken prisoner by the rebels. The lovers face an inevitable death, but noble Boug-Jargal comes to their aid, and now this tragic story has a chance for a happy ending.
