The novel’s events take place in 1791 in the French colony of Saint-Domingue. A young Frenchman, Léopold d’Ovérné, comes here to his wealthy uncle in order to marry his cousin Marie. But on the day of their wedding, the slaves burn the manor and plantations, repeating the strange name “Bug-Jargal.” The colonists, abandoning their possessions, escape by ship. And as for Léopold, by order of his uncle, he is sent to put down the uprising…
