Description
London, 1927. Agnes is a not-very-well-off woman of a certain age who rents out rooms in a inherited mansion. For a long time, at 23 Burlington Square, an almost family-like way of life has prevailed in the house: the tenants are friendly and have grown accustomed to relying on one another. But the sudden death of one of the lodgers shatters the familiar order, and the landlady has to urgently find a new tenant.
Three people are vying for the room: a respectable bank clerk, a quiet young widow, and Agnes’s energetic young niece. Whom should she choose, when any mistake threatens gossip, scandal, and consequences far more serious than they seem? Agnes doesn’t even suspect that her decision will change the lives of several people at once: between the residents of the house there is a strange, hidden connection, and the new candidates turn out to be nothing like who they claim to be.
In 2023, Jennie Kir was included in the shortlist for the British Association of Romantic Writers’ award in the category “Historical Novel of the Year.” “The Witch of Crow Forest” made it into the Observer selection “What to read this autumn”—2024, ranking in the top ten.
