Winter of 1943. Soviet troops push forward toward Oryol in fierce fighting. To find out how the enemy’s defenses are organized—and at the same time to capture a “tongue”—a group of scouts is sent into the Germans’ rear. Among them is a Red Army soldier, Yegor Shchukin, who already has several dangerous raids beyond the front line to his credit. The scouts manage to infiltrate the positions of Hitler’s men and capture a German officer. But disappearing unnoticed doesn’t work—the fascists launch a pursuit. Shchukin volunteers to cover the withdrawal of his comrades alone. He is already preparing for death when he unexpectedly receives help he could not even have hoped for…
