In the village of Kirillov in the K… province, two companions serve in a cuirassier regiment. Staff captain Avdey Ivanovich Luchkov is an avid duelist, an uneducated heckler and a bully, and young cornet Fyodor Fyodorovich Kister is a smart, refined, educated and well-read nobleman. It would seem a chasm lies between these men, and they could never find common ground. But, oddly enough, they grow closer and even start to be friends. Yet, as Cicero said, “Friendship can unite only worthy people.” Their friends will have to learn how true that is, and they’ll find out quite quickly.
