"… The road story «Breakfast in Five in the Morning» was the result of a trip from New York to California by rail. Many travel books have been written about this truly great country. People traveled on foot, by car, on horses, along rivers and lakes—describing what they saw; but from the windows of the «Amtrak» company train, apparently, this had not yet been done. I defined the genre of the book as «Travel Notes Turned into a Documentary Tale»…"
On the pages of the book, meetings with passengers of an American «Amtrak» train are described, interwoven with episodes from the author’s personal life, and it also tells of the surprising destinies of emigrants from Russia. These days, when Russians have gained freedom of movement, emigration has become an acute problem. Perhaps the difficult fates of emigrants described in this book will seem to many readers not only entertaining, but also instructive.
