Description
M. N. Volkovsky (1860–1917) was a novelist and playwright, the chief editor of the magazine “Niva,” whom rightly called the “Russian Dumas.” Developing the “adventurous” line of the historical novel, he combined in his works an intriguing plot, speed and energy of action, a light, elegant style, and a sense of mystery and mysticism. At the center of his works lies the “unofficial history” of the 18th century—something that can be deciphered only many years later.

The novel “The Duke’s Brother” tells of the triumph and fall of General-Anshef Gustav Biron, favorite of the Russian empress Anna Ioannovna—fortunate in service but unhappy in love. The book’s heroes get caught in a complex braid of events from the very first pages, making the reader empathize with them, keeping tension until the very last lines!
