An old carpenter, Roger, unexpectedly received a large sum of money as an inheritance. He thanked the Lord for it and made a vow: “You made me Your treasurer. I will spend money on poor, disadvantaged children…”—because “the Kingdom of Heaven” belongs to them.
With this in mind, he went to London, where his eldest daughter lived, and to look for a brother he hadn’t seen in many years. Searching for his brother, Roger encountered the lives of homeless children who earned money by begging. He learned with surprise that many of them don’t want to give up their trade, because it brings a significant income. His down-and-out brother, too, was poor—because he didn’t want to work. Roger understood that giving money to little street urchins only contributes to their degradation, since they would never give up a carefree lifestyle, and later would join the ranks of the criminal world.
