Irvin Cobb was one of the most popular authors of his time—though today, in large part, he is forgotten, because most of his thousands of articles, essays, reviews, and short stories appeared in small publications such as newspapers (which in those days published not only news, but also fiction) and magazines. Altogether, Cobb wrote more than 60 books and 300 short stories. Several stories from the “Judge Priest” series were adapted in the 1930s for feature films directed by John Ford.
