At first there was only the eternal, boundless and dark beginning—Chaos. In it lay the source of life and of all that exists. From immeasurable Chaos arose the world and the immortal gods. From it also was born the goddess of Earth—Gaia: mighty, widely spread, granting life to everything that grows and lives upon it. Deep beneath the Earth, at a depth as unreachable as the bright sky stretches high above us, there appeared the gloomy Tartar—terrible abysses filled with eternal darkness. From Chaos, as from the primal source, there also arose the great power that enlivens everything—Love, Eros. Thus the creation of the world began. Boundless Chaos gave birth to eternal Darkness—Erebus—and the dark Night—Nyx. And from Night and Darkness came eternal Light—Aether, and the clear, joyful Day—Hemera. Light spread throughout the world, and ever since then night and day have been changing places.
