The story is devoted to Attila the Conqueror, who grew up among nomads and ended up in the stone world of Rome. He feels like a captive and a stranger. Every incident and every action of the people around him shapes and strengthens his warlike character. He will grow older and be able to bring them under his will. The narrative resembles a mosaic, combining the viewpoints of Attila’s contemporary—the writer Priscus—the inhabitants of Rome, and even the emperor himself and his entourage.
