The novella is dedicated to the conqueror Attila. Born a nomad, he ends up in Rome’s stone river. He is a prisoner, he is a stranger. Every event, every act of the people around him shapes and tempers Attila’s warlike character. He will grow up—he will clench them in his fist.
The novella is like a mosaic, with room for Priscus, Attila’s contemporary writer, the everyday people of Rome, as well as the emperor and his court.
