Description
“Mad Special Forces” (English: “The Men Who Stare at Goats” — “Men Who Stare at Goats”) is a popular nonfiction book by John Ronson, published in 2004, describing the use by the U.S. Army intelligence of New Age movement concepts and the potential military application of paranormal phenomena. The title comes from attempts to kill a goat by staring at it with your eyes.
The study was conducted by John Ronson and documentary filmmaker John Sergeant.

The book is a supplement to the television series “Crazy Rulers of the World” (English: “Crazy Rulers of the World”), broadcast in 2004 in the UK on Channel 4. The first episode of the series is also called “Men Who Stare at Goats,” and the other two are “Funny Torture” and “The Psychic Footsoldiers.”
Note
The title “The Men Who Stare at Goats” was used for the third time for a free comedic film adaptation in 2009. The director is Grant Heslov; the leading roles are played by George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Jeff Bridges, and Kevin Spacey.

John Ronson is considered a successor to the traditions of gonzo journalism, whose founder was Hunter Thompson. Gonzo journalism is a style of journalism from the 60s–70s in which events are described from the angle of their emotional component. It is characterized by deep subjectivism, first-person authorship, and the direct involvement of the journalist in the described events. At the lexical level it’s marked by freedom, ease, sarcasm, humor, an active use of quotations, and sometimes even profanity.
