Who drowned at river crossings in icy water, who was torn apart by shell fragments, who was buried by earth in a shattered tank-turned ditch, and who, in the end, burned inside a hit tank… But the hardest fate was for those who perished in German camps. Whatever the case, notices were sent to all the families of these people: “Your husband… a native of… while at the… front, went missing… date.” And there were the signatures of the commander, the political commissar, and the chief of staff. And no assistance—no support that the families of fallen soldiers were supposed to receive. And years, years, years of unknownness…
