Description
Yuri Davydov (1924–2002) is a master of historical prose, author of novels and novellas “The Fate of Usoltsev,” “The Straw Cottage. Two Batches of Letters,” “Evenings in Kolmovo,” and “The Quiet Season of Leaf Fall.” Winner of the “Triumph” award (1996), Knight of the Order “For Merit to the Fatherland,” IV class (1999). The novel “Bestseller” stands somewhat apart among Davydov’s works. Critics called it strange and saw in it a prototype of future prose with its “freedom from genre constraints.”

At the center of the novel is Vladimir Lvovich Burtsev, a разоблачитель (exposer) of secret police department agents, a famous hunter for provocateurs. His final case becomes the exposure of the “Protocols of the Elders of Zion”—a forgery that supposedly reveals the secret of a world Jewish conspiracy.

The novel was awarded the Apollon Grigoriev Major Prize. “In ‘Bestseller,’ Davydov has the power of the author’s personal experience—deeply felt, learned through much,” (Stanislav Rassadin). “And there will be plot mysteries, and a dense historical flavor, and fateful passions. Yet the author will not give up anything of his own: neither the moral commandments of Russian intelligentsia, nor the habit of mixing documentary material with fantasy, nor his love for poetry…” (Andrey Nemzer).
