Description
The play takes place in a provincial town on the banks of the Volga. Larisa Dmitrievna Ogudalova, the romantic beauty—daughter of a penniless noble widow and, of course, without a dowry—falls head over heels in love with the handsome Sergey Sergeevich Paratov, a shipowner and splendid, but unscrupulous and calculating man who, for his own whim, is willing to stake not only his own life but also someone else’s.
