On the planet Salutai, during a ceremonial procession, the Empress of the Eight Worlds is killed. Exiled Prince Harivarman—held on the Radiant of the Templar essentially as a prisoner—realizes that the next target of the killers may be him, and decides to escape. While in captivity, engaged in archaeology, the prince discovers a functioning extraterrestrial machine—a relic berserker; he also finds an ancient access code. But what will happen if he uses it? Will the ship obey a human—or will it destroy both the prince and the entire Radiant?
