The novel “The White Dominican” is devoted to the alchemical tradition. Through the language of parables and allegories, Meyrink tells the reader about the mysterious process of a person’s spiritual becoming. Already in the main character’s name—Christoph Taubenchlag—the key idea of the novel is encrypted: Christoph in Greek means “the one who carries Christ,” and Taubenchlag, translated from German, means “pigeon loft.” Every person carries Christ within themselves—the spark of God, the immortal soul, symbolized by the dove. But often we don’t even think about what treasure we keep in our heart, and we lock our soul away in a cage-pigeon loft. “The White Dominican” is a story about a person searching for a way out of the dark labyrinths of ignorance into the world of truly Living Ones, into the time-defeating formula of “VIVO,” “I live.”
