The work is written as a chronicle of the life of a small county town of Kholodny—although the author uses it to refer to Kolomna—in the period from the 18th to the 19th century. The author managed to combine, in a single book, family traditions, satire, and a love idyll, skillfully seasoned with colorful depictions of provincial manners. In the end, he created a kind of encyclopedia of the city’s life.
