Description

The book consists of correspondence between an elderly titular adviser, Makar Alekseyevich Devushkin, and his more distant relative, Varvara Dobrosyolova. Both characters are in dire need; constant financial constraints are an inescapable part of their lives. The letters they write to one another sometimes become their only consolation amid the endless grayness of everyday life.
