Among sociologists, economics researchers, and researchers of religion there’s a common misconception that in the Christian world only Protestant ideology is compatible with entrepreneurship, while Orthodoxy somehow does everything to prevent people from accumulating earthly goods. The history of Russian capitalism contradicts this claim, but until now there has been no clear explanation of the phenomenon of Orthodox entrepreneurship. Sergey Sharapov and Marina Ulybysheva argue that the desire for prosperity and well-being is built into human nature by God and is directed toward spreading Christian values. An Orthodox worldview not only doesn’t hinder success in any endeavor—it helps you achieve it. Poverty and wealth are what surrounds us. And a proper arrangement of priorities, based on God’s word, helps us take our rightful place in life.
