In one of the courtyards on Vasilievsky Island, in the old Quarter of German apothecaries, there stands a strange brick tower, wrapped in an aura of frightening mystery and filled with countless unsolved secrets. Several centuries ago, at this site there was the laboratory of the pharmacist Wilhelm Pell, who was obsessed with finding an elixir of eternal life and invented a formula that could grant wishes. To this day, no one has been able to find an entrance to his secret laboratory, carefully guarded—so the legend says—by fearsome winged monsters, griffins. During the day they hide in the tower, and at midnight they fly out and terrify the residents of the quarter.
