Description
Dino Buzzati is a well-known Italian writer, journalist, and playwright, the author of books “The Mystery of the Old Forest” and “The Tartar Desert.”

Buzzati’s work is often compared to Poe, Kafka, Camus, and Sartre.

In this novel you will meet an outcast forester who is waiting for a chance to atone for his guilt. In Russian, “Barnabo of the Mountains” is being published for the first time.

The novel “Barnabo of the Mountains” tells about a group of foresters who live in seclusion in the Alpine forests. They have been assigned to guard a long-abandoned warehouse hidden among the mountains. One night a raid is carried out on the warehouse. A young forester, Barnabo, overcome with fear, abandons his post— for which he is expelled from the unit. The young man has to go down into the valley and live away from the mountains in anxious anticipation of the day when he will be able to correct the mistakes of the past.

It is Barnabo who is the first of Buzzati’s characters to feel the relentless power of time; this theme will appear in other of the author’s works, including the famous parable “The Tartar Desert.”
