Description
Valery Vladimirovich Medvedev (1923—1998) was a Soviet and Russian writer, actor, and musician. His novella “Barankin, Be a Man!” published in 1962 immediately became wildly popular among young readers. The story of how ordinary schoolboys—Yura Barankin and Kostya Malinin—turn into all kinds of animals and even insects captivated both children and adults with its completely unusual take on the typical shortcomings of schoolchildren: laziness, ineptness, and an overactive imagination for tricks. Having, quite literally, been in someone else’s skin, these kids understood that being a human being is both honorable and responsible. Based on the novella “Barankin, Be a Man!” an animated film was made, and operetta and a comedy stage production were also mounted. This book is published for the first time with illustrations by contemporary artist Katya Kostina.

For middle-grade readers.
