Lieutenant Colonel Goncharov, recognized as the best investigator in Saint Petersburg, begins an investigation at a young woman’s request—someone he is very fond of. He tries to unravel a tangled case involving the arrest of her stepfather, a respected scientist and former rector of an elite university. For almost a year, he has been imprisoned based on testimony from the rector of a provincial division—accused of corruption and embezzlement. The girl herself and her statement raise countless questions for Goncharov, questions he is determined to answer. In the end, however, he himself finds himself in serious trouble.
