Description
In a Viennese coffeehouse, an unknown narrator meets a Russian pianist, Suvorin. In the past, Suvorin was famous as a young musician from Leningrad and was friends with well-known composers, but the communist regime and alcohol destroyed his life. The narrator listens to his story with admiration, because it is close to him. As their encounters continue, their stories become more and more alike. It turns out their meeting was not accidental. This is a novel about creativity, loneliness, and genius—as well as the courage that people must muster when facing old age.

"Autoportrait Against the Backdrop of a Russian Piano" is a literary work that explores the eternal question of whether beauty, music, and passion are worth the sacrifices those victims make for them.

"A romantic in a madhouse. Ignoring Vondratchek’s voice in the world of contemporary literature would be a huge mistake." — Patrick Süskind, writer.
