Ardis Audio Studio presents Alexandre Dumas’s novel “Ascanio,” written with the assistance of playwright Paul Merris based on the memoirs of Benvenuto Cellini.
The action takes place in the 1540s during the reign of Francis I. The Italian jeweler and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini, who was in conflict with Pope Paul III, fled Italy to be received at the French court.
During his stay in France, he encountered hostility from the Duchess d’Etampes, the king’s former mistress.
The book is dedicated to Ascanio, a young student of Cellini who accompanies his master to France. As in most of Dumas’s novels, the story begins with a historical foundation of real figures (Cellini, the Duchess d’Etampes…), upon which fictional events are layered.
