On geographical maps of the Arctic you can find many Russian place names. This is a memory of those times when our compatriots were exploring one of the harshest regions of the Earth. Russian expeditions studied the entire northern coast of Eurasia, discovered the strait between America and Asia, visited the Pole of relative inaccessibility, worked on the first drifting stations… The book “Arctic. The History of Exploration of the Far North. A Large Illustrated Atlas” tells the stories of Russian researchers and their expeditions. The reader will learn about the journeys of Semyon Dezhnyov, Vitus Bering, and Alexey Chirikov, about the heroes of the Great Northern Expedition, about the voyages of Fyodor Litke, and the polar research of Otto Schmidt, Ivan Papanin, and Mikhail Somov. A special feature of the edition is its many illustrations. Pages from field journals, sketches by artists, maps and photographs will bring the rhythm of expedition life of the past to the reader. The author of the text is journalist Dmitry Ivanov, who has been studying the history of geographical discoveries for many years. Among his publications on this topic are articles in the magazine “Around the World” and the book “Great Geographical Discoveries. A Large Illustrated Atlas.”
