Description
Gustav Meyrink (1868–1932) was a well-known Austrian expressionist writer famous for his mystical works, including the novel “Golem.” Together with authors such as Kafka and Perutz, he helped form the famous Prague literary school. Meyrink actively explored occultism and theosophy, and he also showed interest in Eastern practices. Stories circulated about him as an alchemist—something he happily supported.

“The Angel of the West Window” is Meyrink’s most significant work, known for his esoteric leanings. In it, the characters are presented as immortals acting in the era of Shakespeare, in the 20th century, and in the afterlife, where their true essence is revealed. The main plotline centers on the English natural philosopher John Dee and his distant descendant, who ultimately overcomes evil forces and gains conscious understanding of the afterlife. The novel is rich in symbolism of Hermeticism, Kabbalah, spiritualism, and alchemy.

Besides works by other authors, Meyrink’s novels “The Angel of the West Window” and “The Green Face” significantly influenced Mikhail Bulgakov. His “The Master and Margarita” can be seen as a variation on Meyrink’s themes, with elements such as doubles, the motif of redemption, and an ironic epilogue.

For this edition, comments by Vera Akhtyrskaya have been added to help readers understand the many hidden and obvious references to alchemy, Kabbalah, and occultism contained in this deep and mysterious work of world literature.
